St Peters Festivities

The vibrant São Pedro Festival returns to Ribeira Brava in 2025, bringing with it the joy and traditions of this deeply rooted Madeiran celebration.
The religious observances begin with preparatory novenas and culminate in a solemn mass followed by a grand procession in honor of Saint Peter. A highlight of the procession is the traditional barquinha—a small, flower-adorned boat decorated with fishing tools and the saint’s image—symbolizing the community’s strong ties to the sea.
One of the most iconic features of the festival is the “Sword Dance,” a historic ritual performed by seven men dressed in white shorts, red jackets, and green feathered caps. Their synchronized movements, set to the rhythm of a tambourine, keep this centuries-old tradition alive.
Local Flavors and Festive Spirit
Food is a central part of the festivities, with the beach setting the stage for the popular pebble-grilled skewers that draw locals and visitors alike. Street vendors add to the festive ambiance with an array of traditional treats, from candy necklaces and sweets to toys and small musical instruments.
To ensure everyone can enjoy the celebrations, Ribeira Brava City Council typically provides free shuttle services connecting all parishes within the municipality, along with direct routes from Funchal to Ribeira Brava.
