Madeira Flower Festival

The Madeira Flower Festival is a tribute to spring, and celebrates the abundance of flowers that colour and perfume Madeira – the Garden of the Atlantic. The event is famous for the splendid floats and costumes of the hundreds of participants, mostly children, richly adorned with many types of flowers, parading along a planned route to the sound of festive music.

Wall of Hope – Childrens Parade
On Saturday morning, over a thousand children, each carrying a flower, parade from Avenida Arriaga to Praça do Município to place a flower on a wall filled with symbolism, the “Wall of Hope”.

Procession
On Sunday May 3rd and Sunday May 17th, in the afternoon, the streets of Funchal city centre are once again filled with music, colour and aromas. A huge float parade features hundreds of flower dancers accompanied by huge floral floats to the sound of festive music and choreography.

Flower Exhibition and Workshops
The Flower Exhibition is held in the centre of Funchal, at Praça do Povo. This unique flower display shows the finest flowers grown with much care and devotion, all around Madeira. The flowers in display are judged under various categories and the best are awarded prizes by a panel of experts.

Flower Carpets and Decoration
The tradition of flower carpets thrives throughout the island and had its origins in the decoration of religious processions. These wonderful pieces of floral art are displayed in the central walkways of Avenida Arriaga.
