Cantar os Reis – Singing of the Kings

This is one of the oldest and most popular traditions in Madeira celebrated on the 12th night after Christmas all over the island. A ritual that brings together families, friends and neighbours who come out to the streets to “sing the epiphany” or “Janeiras” from door to door.The Association of the Casas do Povo organises and produces the traditional twelfth night songs show with a free concert to be held in the Auditorium of the Municipal Garden (opposite Café Teatro) in Funchal at 8pm. Outdoor concerts are held all over the island, including Ribeira Brava and Câmara de Lobos. The traditional carols are performed by local musical groups.
