SUMMARY:Madeira Flower Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Madeira Flower Festival is a tribute to spring\, and celebrates the abundance of flowers that colour and perfume Madeira – the Garden of the Atlantic. The event is famous for the splendid floats and costumes of the hundreds of participants\, mostly children\, richly adorned with many types of flowers\, parading along a planned route to the sound of festive music. \nWall of Hope – Childrens Parade\nOn Saturday morning\, over a thousand children\, each carrying a flower\, parade from Avenida Arriaga to Praça do Município to place a flower on a wall filled with symbolism\, the “Wall of Hope”. \nProcession\nOn Sunday May 3rd and Sunday May 17th\, in the afternoon\, the streets of Funchal city centre are once again filled with music\, colour and aromas. A huge float parade features hundreds of flower dancers accompanied by huge floral floats to the sound of festive music and choreography. \nFlower Exhibition and Workshops\nThe Flower Exhibition is held in the centre of Funchal\, at Praça do Povo. This unique flower display shows the finest flowers grown with much care and devotion\, all around Madeira. The flowers in display are judged under various categories and the best are awarded prizes by a panel of experts. \nFlower Carpets and Decoration\nThe tradition of flower carpets thrives throughout the island and had its origins in the decoration of religious processions. These wonderful pieces of floral art are displayed in the central walkways of Avenida Arriaga.

DESCRIPTION:In the Flower Pavilion\, the Regional Floriculture Competition will be one of the highlights of the Festival\, with the theme “Ornaments and Flowers”\, an event organized by the Regional Secretariat of Agriculture and Fisheries (SRAP). \nWhere architecture\, handicrafts and flowers intertwine\, the pavilion invites visitors to embark on a sensory journey through Madeira’s gardens. The inspiration comes from the lacework of the lambrequins\, the “mirantes”(viewpoints) and the traditional “Casinhas de Prazer” (small summer houses)\, evoking the times when people masterfully embroidered\, read in the shade of the flowers or enjoyed tea surrounded by floral perfumes. This is a true tribute to Madeira’s beauty\, tradition and creativity\, celebrating the best the Region has to offer in terms of shapes\, colours\, aromas… and art.

SUMMARY:Madeira Classic Car Revival
DESCRIPTION:Some say there are over 1000 Classic Cars on Madeira … and over 700 will be on display. The Madeira Classic Car Revival is an annual auto event taking place in the areas surrounding Praça do Povo in Funchal. Cars are in place by 10h00 and the exhibition closes at 18h00.From vintage racers to modern classics\, enthusiasts can share their passion for classic and vintage cars\, old motorbikes\, scooters and bicycles. Vehicles on display\, manufactured prior to 1980\, are a glamorous showcase of automobile history and all cars are judged for the most original and elegantly restored. An award ceremony takes place at the end of the day for the most original\, best restored and best of show vehicles in various classes. Awards are also given for motorbikes\, scooters and bicycles.\nAttracting visitors and spectators from all over the world\, this exhibition also includes car restoration demonstrations\, with the owners always on hand to proudly explain the history of their Classic Car.\nOn the Sunday\, there will be held a commemorative race called “Rampa dos Barreiros”. The “Rampa dos Barreiros” was the first speed race held in Madeira in 1935 and was won by Ribeiro Ferreira at the wheel of a fabulous Bugatti.\nThe object of the race is for the cars to make three separate circuits of a short course in exactly the same time. The car that manages the closest time to their original run wins the competition.\nThere will be 60 classic cars competing along the route very similar to the original route in 1935. The cars will all start from Avenida Sa Carneiro and finish at the gate of Quinta Magnolia. One of the best places to view the cars will be at the bridge of Ribeiro Seco. Every car in the race will arrive at 30 second intervals – and in between you will be entertained by the exhibitions’ very own “special policeman” on duty at Ponte do Ribeiro Seco.
